Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What is multidetector CT (computed tomography)?

Multidetector CT (computed tomography) is a very rapid advanced x-ray system that can take multiple pictures of moving objects, i.e., the heart, in just a few seconds. Digital pictures are then created in .75 millimeter slices, allowing doctors to see a cross-sectional view of the body. It is the most comprehensive scan technology and key to early detection of diseases, when they are most treatable.

How do I know if I'm a good candidate for a CT scan?

Anyone is a candidate for a scan. If you are young and healthy, it can provide a excellent benchmark for later comparison.

Individuals with family histories of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are ideal candidates for a CT scan. In addition, those with a smoking history, exposed to secondhand smoke and sedentary or stressful lifestyles should also have one.

Will my insurance cover the exams?

If your insurance covers wellness or pro-active health services you may get reimbursed for the CT scan, especially if you were referred by a doctor because of a specific risk factor. However, most insurance policies are designed to pay for medical treatment only once diseases are found. BodyVision's CT scan is designed to catch risk factors to avoid many of these diseases in the first place.

Who can benefit most from these procedures?

The procedure is an appropriate tool for individuals at risk for lung or colon cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. People with a smoking history, including those exposed to second-hand smoke, as well as those with a family history of heart disease, lead a sedentary lifestyle or are overweight will also benefit from the evaluation. Finally, those with a family history of vascular disorders such as aortic aneurysms also see great benefits.

Is CT screening safe?

Absolutely. Our scanners are FDA approved to comply with federal regulations. (Go to "How does the FDA regulate scanning"). In addition, the technical features applied to the Siemens Somatom 16 CT Scanner keep radiation exposure to a minimum.

Is there a risk of radiation exposure?

Siemens' C.A.R.E. philosophy -- Combined Applications to Reduce Exposure -- is the fundamental approach adopted by the engineers who built the Somatom 16. The unique design ensures a minimal dose of radiation while still producing the highest quality images.

Why is it important to do blood work as well as the scan?

Blood work analysis will give further insight into your health and allow you to see the most complete picture about the state of your body. Visual images from a scan are not able to detect abnormalities in your blood and without complete blood work, you could miss vital information that could save your life.
